Soundzania

by (user deleted) 09 Dec 2011 07:05

Soundzania is a loosely bound group of Dads who were at one time in rock and roll bands. Two years after band-mates Scott Flory, Ken Hougasian, and Lee Parker gave up the late nights and smoky-club lifestyle of a rock band, all three began enjoying the late nights and smelly-diaper lifestyle of fatherhood. During this time, Scott, Ken and Lee each lovingly created music to make their kids smile (or, in some cases, sleep). After rave reviews from their own children, they set out to create Soundzania.

Back when Kindie music was just called kids music, my brother asked me if I could write a few educational songs for his first grade class. I was a corporate business consultant at the time, but my inner songwriter was begging (in A, A, B, A form) to get out, so I took on the challenge. I had an absolute blast writing the songs and even more fun recording them with some rock band friends in their basement before sending them off to school (the songs, not the rock band friends). My brother called to report that the whole school was rocking out to the tape (yes, tape, that's how long ago it was - we're talking BASF chrome). The kids were listening and singing and even learning - they wanted to know when more tunes were coming. I made copies and sent them out to more teachers and parents. Positive feedback and more inspiration soon followed, so against the thoughtful advice of my accountant, I decided to "quit my day job" and pursue a career in kids music.

The Okee Dokee Brothers

As childhood friends, Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing, spent summers at their neighborhood creek building makeshift rafts, fishing for crawdads, and dreaming of great river adventures.

Now, as The Okee Dokee Brothers, they have realized these boyhood dreams on none other than the great Mississippi River. On June 1st, 2011, Joe and Justin began a canoe trip in Minneapolis, MN and continued down the river for the next 30 days until they arrived at the St. Louis Gateway Arch. During their month long journey on the Mississippi, they camped, canoed, filmed, and most importantly, composed the songs that make up their new album for kids and families.

Can You Canoe? is the first CD and DVD in what The Okee Dokee Brothers are calling their “Adventure Album Series.” Produced by Dean Jones in his Rosendale, NY hay-bale studio, the record highlights guest appearances from Garth Hudson (The Band), Elizabeth Mitchell (You Are My Flower), as well as Morgan Taylor and Rachel Loshak (Gustafer Yellowgold).
